Attracting Attention Can Help Motorcyclists Avoid Accidents

August 14, 2015

Riding a motorcycle is a great way to get around the scenic roadways of northern Pennsylvania. But motorcycles are at a decided disadvantage in the size department compared with the cars and trucks that travel the state’s highways and byways. And drivers of these other vehicles often claim it is difficult to see motorcycles, even when they are in close proximity.

This inability to be seen poses a tremendous safety hazard for motorcyclists. Just a nudge from a negligent driver could cause a rider to take a very nasty spill. But there are measures motorcyclists can take to better attract the attention of drivers. What follows are some things riders can do to make others on the road more aware of their presence.

  • Turn on your lights. Obviously, you want your lights on during the nighttime, but your lights can also make you more visible when traveling in daylight.
  • Choose bright, reflective colors for your helmet, apparel and motorcycle. While riding a black motorcycle while wearing black gear may have a certain coolness, bright colors are better for catching the eyes of motorists.
  • Swerve a little bit. Motion also attracts attention, so incorporate some side to side movement while riding in your lane.
  • Increase the noise level. When you suspect you are not being noticed by the traffic around you, you can beep your horn or rev your engine a bit.

As a motorcyclist, you likely understand that you must compensate for the inattentiveness of the drivers around you. But at some point you may find yourself in circumstances beyond your control. Should a driver fail to yield or be distracted at an inopportune moment, you could be the victim of a serious collision.

If you are ever harmed due to the negligence of someone else while riding your motorcycle, a Pennsylvania personal injury attorney may be able to help you get compensation for your injuries.
