Out of State DUI Attorneys in Pennsylvania

Experienced Erie, PA DUI Lawyers Help Out-of-State Residents Fight Drunk Driving Charges

You may have been vacationing in Pennsylvania, or driving through Pennsylvania for work, when you got pulled over and arrested for drunk driving – but your troubles won’t remain in PA. That’s because a Pennsylvania DUI conviction will likely result in your home state suspending your driver’s license. Imagine not being able to drive to and from work each day, or not being able to pick up your kids from school or soccer practice, or not being able to travel anywhere because you are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle. That’s what could happen if your out-of-state DUI charges in Pennsylvania follow you back to your residence in New Jersey, New York, or wherever you live. The best way to avoid a conviction in your PA DUI case is to have an experienced drunk driving defense lawyer on your side.

Out-of-State Driver DUI Charges in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is part of the Interstate Driver’s License Compact, an agreement between 45 states to share driver’s license information with each other. If your driver’s license is suspended in one state, like Pennsylvania, then it will probably also be suspended in your home state. That’s because the Interstate Driver’s License Compact also shares information about traffic offenses and DUI convictions. So, it won’t matter that your driver’s license was issued by another state – a conviction for a DUI offense in PA will be reported to your home state and you will likely be barred from operating a motor vehicle in either location. Beyond that, you could be subject to additional penalties from your state of residence – penalties that go beyond those imposed by the court in Pennsylvania.

For Pennsylvania motorists who are convicted of drunk driving while visiting another state, there are also serious consequences. In fact, you are legally required to obey PA traffic laws when driving in a state like New Jersey or New York. Any out-of-state convictions for drunk driving, or similar offenses, will be reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). If you are convicted of a DUI in NJ, NY, or anywhere else, you may face an additional penalty in Pennsylvania: suspension of your driver’s license for a period of at least one year.
