What Is an ‘Upper Coupler’ in PA Truck Accident Law?

What Is an Upper Coupler on a Commercial Truck?

An “upper coupler” — also called an upper fifth wheel plate or kingpin plate — is the structural component at the front underside of a semi-trailer that connects to the tractor’s fifth wheel to form the trailer coupling. Together with the fifth wheel on the tractor, the upper coupler allows the trailer to pivot horizontally as the truck turns while remaining securely hitched during normal operation. It is one of the most critical mechanical connections in a tractor-trailer combination.

How the Upper Coupler Works

The upper coupler is a flat steel plate welded or bolted to the trailer’s front frame. At its center is a kingpin — a vertical steel pin that locks into the fifth wheel on the tractor. When the truck is properly coupled, the kingpin engages a locking jaw mechanism in the fifth wheel, securing the trailer to the tractor. The upper coupler plate itself bears the trailer’s weight on the tractor’s fifth wheel and must be strong enough to withstand the forces generated during acceleration, braking, and turning at highway speeds.

Upper Coupler Defects and Truck Accidents

The upper coupler is subject to significant stress over time, and defects or failures can result in catastrophic accidents:

  • Cracked or fractured upper coupler plate: Metal fatigue, overloading, or improper repairs can weaken the plate until it fails
  • Worn or damaged kingpin: A worn kingpin may not lock securely in the fifth wheel, creating dangerous play in the coupling or a risk of separation
  • Corrosion: In northern climates like Erie, road salt accelerates corrosion of trailer components, including the upper coupler assembly
  • Improper maintenance: Federal regulations require regular inspection and maintenance of coupling components; failure to comply can create liability

A trailer separation accident — where the trailer becomes completely detached from the tractor while underway — can be one of the most deadly events on a highway, as the trailer becomes an uncontrolled projectile.
