What are the motorcycle helmet requirements in Pennsylvania?

There is no shortage of opinions among motorcyclists regarding the wearing of helmets. Some may feel that helmets inhibit the experience of being out on the open road. Others might believe that the head protection that helmets provide during an accident makes their use extremely important.

Regardless of which side of the debate you come down on, the state of Pennsylvania has very specific helmet laws for motorcycle riders. So, do you have to wear a helmet while riding your motorcycle? The short answer is that anyone who rides or operates a motorcycle is required to don protective headgear.

However, there are exceptions. If you are over 21 years old and have either completed an approved safety course or have two years' experience of having ridden a motorcycle, you do not have to wear a helmet.

In order to be in compliance with the state laws, helmets must be up to the standards established by the United States Department of Transportation. A "DOT" sticker, which indicates that the helmet is up to standard, is required on the helmet's exterior.

Additionally, you are required to wear some form of eye protection. You will be in compliance wearing any sort of protective gear, but shatterproof eyewear is recommended.

Whether or not to wear a helmet is a personal choice in the state of Pennsylvania. But it should be mentioned that studies indicate helmets offer notable protection against neck and head injuries in case of a crash.

From distracted drivers to debris on the road, motorcyclists face numerous dangers while out riding. A motorcycle accident can leave riders with catastrophic injuries and even permanent disabilities. If you have been in a motorcycle accident, you may be facing financial issues brought on by medical expenses and time lost from work.

A Pennsylvania personal injury attorney could look at the details of your accident and may be able to help you get the compensation you need for your recovery.
